PenTile® technology is extremely flexible and able to fit the specific needs of display devices by boosting brightness or reducing power, or providing a combination of the two—without compromising resolution. This is key to the evolving needs of next-generation applications, which are now affected by factors such as:
- “Always-on” mobile displays. Unlike legacy cell phones where the display is only illuminated momentarily, visual applications require the display backlight to be powered continuously. The constant power drain for such devices will greatly impact already-tight power budgets.
- MPEG decompression. Decompressing video and other graphical content takes considerable processing power, forcing a choice between device runtime and bright displays.
- Better resolution and image performance. As the needs for higher resolution, number of colors, and color saturation increase to enable content such as text, maps and other detailed graphics, display transmissivity is reduced, further exacerbating power consumption
- Mobile video needs more brightness. Mobile video displays need either much higher contrast or at least twice the brightness of a legacy display, as well as a dramatically higher dynamic range.
PenTile RGBW™ technology integration will enable display manufacturers to introduce third-generation mobile displays that satisfy these new demands with product that is affordable and is readily manufactured.
PenTile RGBW™ technology can be readily applied to several growing segments of the display market. Its flexible design characteristics enable adoption by OEMs, display manufacturers, and other providers.
